Woman charged with animal cruelty in case involving 145 animals

ORANGE COVE, Caif. (FOX26 NEWS) — The Central California SPCA says a woman has been officially charged with animal cruelty in case where 145 animals (142 dogs and 3 cats) were seized from a "no-kill" rescue in Orange Cove.

SPCA officials say Mary Kay Nelson is now facing six charges of animal cruelty after officers found several animals suffering from a variety of medical conditions at Noah's Friends Animal Sanctuary in 2016.

Officers say many of the dogs were in extremely emaciated with parasites, as well as other diseases. The dogs were living inside and outside, confined to small crates, covered to feces and urine, and without food or water.

The CCSPCA says all of the animals have been taken to its facility and are receiving medical care. It says 83% of the

dogs tested positive for Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, tick borne diseases, which afflict humans and other animals. 65% of the dogs tested positive for internal parasites, consisting of roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and coccidia.
