Police investigating case of puppies found mutilated in Oakland

Dog owners, beware — it seems someone's been torturing puppies in Oakland, and now the Oakland Police Department is joining animal services on the investigation.

Three badly mutilated puppies — two German Shepherds and a 4-month-old husky — were found partially buried at a trash pile near 89th and G streets in East Oakland on Monday, according to Rocket Dog Rescue.

One of the German Shepherds had a missing paw and the other had an infected, broken jaw, according to the rescue. The husky was also found with a broken jaw. Rescuers described finding the puppies cowering under a mattress amid shards of broken glass and ripped sheets of fiberglass.

Puppies rescued after Monterey storms reunited with their possible mother

Three puppies rescued from underneath a middle school classroom after a storm in Monterey county have been reunited with a dog that may be their mother.

"We are investigating and working with OPD," Oakland Animal Services Director Rebecca Katz told SFGATE. "Two of the dogs are being treated in SF and one is here in Oakland. Prognosis is still unknown but the injuries are significant."

"It was like nothing I've ever seen before," Pali Boucher of Rocket Dog Rescue said of the dogs' condition to NBC Bay Area.

Now the Oakland police have joined the investigation, according to Officer Johnna Watson.

Pet Food Express is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for hurting the dogs.

According to the rescue, after fighting for her life, the German Shepherd puppy with the broken jaw whom they've named Freya, is responding well to fluids, antibiotics and pain medication. She was excited to be reunited with the pup she was found alongside.

"You can hear Freya, who, whining with excitement, is so excited that her sister is with her," the rescue wrote on Facebook Tuesday. "The minute they saw each other, they jumped toward each other wagging their tales and frantically kissing each other's faces. Even with her little broken jaw, Freya was covering Frigg with kisses."
